Belarusian and Latvian customs officers discussed issues of inter-institutional cooperation with experts from Eastern and South-Eastern land borders
A meeting of customs and border guard officers of Belarus and experts from Eastern and South-Eastern land borders (CELBET), representatives of the customs and border services of Latvia was held at Urbany checkpoint.
The participants of the session analyzed the data of the questionnaires characterizing the infrastructure and capacity of Urbany and Silene checkpoints, discussed the necessary changes to reconstruct and increase the capacity of these checkpoints, and determined the degree of urgency and the form of the necessary changes in legislation, technologies of customs operations and infrastructure.The issues related to the synchronous reconstruction of adjacent border crossing points were also discussed.The customs officers of Belarus and Latvia shared with CELBET experts positive experience in making joint decisions and working closely in order to prevent queues on the Belarusian-Latvian border.Urbany checkpoint is reconstructed at present.
The new checkpoint will meet modern European requirements. In the framework of the cross-border cooperation program "Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus" 2014-2020 according to the international technical assistance project, the checkpoint will be equipped with a modern X-ray inspection system, footpaths have been created for crossing the border on foot, and the number of lanes between checkpoints has been increased.
