Customs Authorities of the Republic of Belarus implement the international technical assistance Project at the border crossing point “Kamenny Log” – “Medininkai”
In September 2016, the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Belarus confirmed its readiness to be partner of the Directorate of Border Crossing Infrastructure under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania for the implementation of the international technical assistance Project “Modernization of Medininkai Border Crossing Point” under the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Latvia-Lithuania-Belarus 2014-2020 of the European Neighborhood Instrument.
This Programme fosters synergistic partnership of the Latvian, Lithuanian and Belarusian organizations with financial support of the European Union. The strategic goal of the Programme is to strength relations, raise capacities and share experience among people and organizations through the implementation of joined actions, which focus on increasing of the overall life quality in the border regions.
The Project was approved by a decision of the European Commission, on December 17, 2015 by direct award and in August 2018 the full application form was approved. The Grant Contract for the Project was signed on May 14, 2019.
The implementation of the Project began on August 1, 2019, and it’s duration will be 30 months.
The project implemented by the Directorate of Border Crossing Infrastructure under the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania together with the State Customs Committee of the Republic of Belarus in accordance with the Partnership Agreement signed by all the Beneficiaries on December 31, 2018.
The Project is funded by the European Union. The contribution of the European Union for the Republic of Lithuania is € 2.5 million, Republic of Belarus has non-financial contribution.
This Project will contribute to increase the efficiency of border crossing process by means of waiting time reduction and security ensuring for the people crossing the border.
Within the framework of the project, it is planned to conduct 5 training sessions on the exchange of experience for customs officers of the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Lithuania with the goal to coordinate requirements to infrastructure, solve joint problems, exchange experience and therefore strength competence and raise know how in the border control process.
As a result of the Project, the road section between the border crossing points “Kamenny Log” and “Medininkai” will be expanded by increasing the number of lanes in both directions, pedestrian paths are built. As a result of the project implementation the main transport infrastructure at the border crossing point will be improved, which will lead to waiting time reduction for transport, security ensuring for the people crossing the border in both directions (Belarus – Lithuania, Lithuania – Belarus).
The implementation of this Project will contribute to increasing the transit attractiveness of the Republic of Belarus.
