Foreign trade in goods
of the Republic of Belarus
January-February 2008

According to the customs committee statistics*, in January-February 2008 international trade of the Republic of Belarus amounted to $10.4 billion, or 60% up over January-February 2006. The trade with the CIS countries totaled $6 billion (57.5% of the total trade turnover), up 63.4% from January-February 2007. The trade with the non-CIS countries ramped up by 55.6% to $4.4 billion.

Belarus posted a foreign trade deficit of $94.5 million (in January-February 2007 the deficit was $653.4 million). The deficit of the trade with the CIS countries came to $1.4 billion (in January-February 2007 the deficit was $762 million). The trade with the non-CIS countries resulted in a surplus of $1.4 billion (in January- February 2006 the surplus was $108.6 million).

Exports of the Republic of Belarus increased by 76.2% over the same period 2007 to $5.2 billion

Exports to the CIS surged by 56.5% to $2.3 billion

Exports to the non-CIS countries increased by 95.6% to $2.9 billion

Imports of the Republic of Belarus ramped up by 46.7% this year to $5.2 billion

Imports from the CIS countries increased by 68% to $3.7 billion

Imports from the non-CIS countries were up by 12.3% to $1.5 billion.

Belarus increased trade with Russia (up $1.9 billion), the Netherlands (up $767.8 million), Ukraine (up $394.9 million), Great Britain (up $142.2 million), Latvia (up $138.9 million), Brazil (up $96.2 million).

As against January-February 2007 the trade with the Russian Federation surged by 60.9% to $5 billion; the trade resulted in a deficit of $1.7 billion. Exports increased by 42.8%, imports – by 71.5%.

Trade with Ukraine was up 50% to $773.7 million; the trade resulted in a surplus of $213.7 million. Exports were up 2.7 times, imports – 45.4%.

Trade with Kazakhstan decreased by $3.2 million to $65 million; the trade resulted in a surplus of $15.1 million.

Belarus announced a surplus in trade with other CIS countries.

Trade with Moldova increased by $13.5 million to $42.3 million; with Azerbaijan by $9.7 million to $17 million; Tajikistan $6 million to $8.4 million; trade with Turkmenistan was $11.9 million down, with Armenia $1.9 million down.

Trade with the non-CIS countries accounted for 42.5% of the total trade of the Republic of Belarus.

Trade with the EU countries was 66.4% up over January-February 2007 to $3.3 billion (31.9% of the total trade of the Republic of Belarus. Exports increased 2.1 times to $2.4 billion, imports were 6.7% up to $950.5 million.

Trade with the WTO member states was 58.4% up as against January-February 2007 to $4.4 billion (41.9% of the total trade with the Republic of Belarus). Exports increased by 97% to $2.9 billion, imports by 14.4% to $1.5 billion.

Belarus’ major non-CIS trading partners are the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Great Britain.

Customs statistics does not allow for unorganized import/export of goods from/to Russia.
